Sound analysis: blog tasks

 1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClfDIu7C8SM

  • Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
  • Parallel and contrapuntal sound
  • Sound bridges
Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip:
  • Music
  • Dialogue
  • Voiceover
  • Sound effects

  • Within  this short clip of Stranger Things, there is diegetic sound of the female character breathing, this is significant as it is the only diegetic sound and focuses the attention of the viewers on to her breathing suggesting that she is could be frightened by the situation she is in. Also, the non diegetic sound of the tearing and the beating sound sort of like a heart beat of a living being again focuses the viewers attention on the sound because it was very loud and repetitive. These sounds are parallel to the clip because it suits the narrative but also contributes to the Sci-fi/Thriller show and creating an eerie and frightening ambience. The fact that there is no dialogue within this clip raises tension and creates suspense for the viewers which truly helps them focus on the silence of the atmosphere but also on the few sounds like the beating.
