Lighting Blog Tasks

 1) Still image analysis

Look at the still images on slides 33-37 of the Film Language Powerpoint linked above. Copy the images into your blog and answer the following questions for each image:

Low key lighting is used here. The darkness in this still image connotes danger and mystery... There's a film noir type feel. The woman may have received some bad news.

High key lighting is used here , This is illustrated through the attempt to recreate daylight. Natural sun? There are shadows around his eyes.

Low key lighting is used. Light and dark is contrasted. This still image also depicts top lighting. This could convey the man is good and evil.

This still image demonstrates High key lighting as we can clearly see the woman's face / facial expressions lit up with no shadows. Filler light is used and I think top lighting is used once again.

The lighting here creates a natural effect as it seems like the sun escaping. High key lighting is used as we can clearly see them alongside with back lighting.

E:\My docs\My Pictures\Film Stills\clockwork1.jpg

Low key lighting is used here this is clearly shown through not seeing their actual faces and just seeing a figure. back lighting is used also as there is still bright lighting but we can't see any details like what they're wearing and their faces.

In this still image I believe the type of lighting used is low-key lighting due to the presence of the key and back light. There is quite a stark contrast between the shadow and the light In this still image I believe the type of lighting used is low-key lighting due to the presence of the key and back light. This still image is a perfect example of high-key lighting as there are definitely more filler lights used which makes the still look a lot brighter. with less shadows The still image depicts top lighting as there is light on the top of her head but some shadows on her neck as the light isn't able to reach her neck as her head is blocking it meaning that this still must use.

2) Film noir research
  • Film noir is a genre/style of film that is centred around themes of pessimism, fatalism, menace, cynicism and dystopia.
  • Film noir literally translates to 'black cinema' and was a term used by French critics to refer to Hollywood movies with pessimism and darkness.
  • Some common elements of noir films include:
             ⮞ Anti-hero protagonist
             ⮞ Femme Fatale
             ⮞ Tight, concise dialogue
             ⮞ High-contrast lighting
             ⮞ Post-war disillusionment

  • The most important element of film noir is the lighting.
  • It makes use of low-key lighting to create extreme silhouettes and dark shadows.
  • Film noir directors used  chiaroscuro to reveal more about a character's intentions rather than with words.
